Noise event analysis in ARRoW

A few years ago we brought the ARRoW system to the market: the first publicly available track monitoring system based on acoustic measurements. Since then we did not sit on our hands. Based on the real user feedback, we continuously made small improvements to the user experience and the processing speed. Last year we have been working hard to implement and test the noise event analysis option. We are proud to say that it is now available to our customers.

ARRoW is our product for track monitoring. Based on sound measurements, the influene of the track on rolling noise (through roughness and dynamic track behavior) can be assessed in a fast and concise manner. We have been using this technique for over ten years now: starting as a solution to monitor the condition of the Dutch high speed line, but now also applied on conventional heavy and light rail tracks.

During our measurement campaigns we found that we could often identify very distinct noise events by examining the sound level graphs. These events often occur at known track discontinuities such as joints and turn-outs, but also at unknown locations where there are rail defects such as squats. In cooperation with TU Delft and BAM rail we have developed and tested a new algorithm to detect these noise events (see the whitepaper in the download section). This analysis option has now become available in the ARRoW|RailInspector software.

Besides the noise event analysis, we have made it possible to import position data from various systems in various formats, we improved the performance of the roughness analysis by a factor of 20 and we use a new component to present the measurement results as geographic information with well-known map formats.
